This is an exciting time of year in the Valley! Spring is a time of renewal and celebration. It is also the perfect time of year to head outdoors and get your Gilbert backyard landscaping ready!
The freeze warnings have come and gone and the wonderful weather is here. Spring is the perfect time to complete your Gilbert backyard landscaping project! The warmer, longer days create optimal planting conditions.
Whether your calendar calls for backyard bbqs, weekends by the pool, retreating to your own personal outdoor oasis or starting a new garden, we can help deliver your backyard landscaping vision!
Gilbert Backyard Landscaping Design
Consider adding a built-in-bbq to kick up your parties and backyard landscaping a few notches! Our built-in-bbqs are not only functional, but also beautiful. Gone are the days of boring stucco and cracking concrete. Our built-in-bbqs are made of rumble stone and add warmth, richness and structural interest to most any bacckyard landscape design. Whether used for nightly dinners or to entertain family and friends, your built-in-bbq will become the centerpiece of your outdoor living space!
Looking for a WOW Factor? Consider adding an eye-catching water feature to your landscape design. Water features are very popular in Gilbert. Many homeowners opt for water features rather than swimming pools. They are much less expensive than pools, and much easier to maintain. In addition, they can be relaxing and give your outdoor space a resort-like feel.
Consider adding some LED lighting to show off your outdoor living space. LED landscape lighting is definitely the way to go these days! We all know that with Gilbert’s summertime temperatures, many do not venture out until the sun has gone down. As such, outdoor lighting is extremely important. Outdoor lighting not only will make your space more usable, but will also make your space more elegant and serene. Outdoor lighting can give your property a whole new look once the sun goes down!
Are you an avid gardener? Or, are you always looking to plant something new? If so, consider adding a retaining wall to your landscape design. Retaining walls can be used to create beautiful and functional planters or raised gardens. Gardners can add specialty soils to these planters to create optimal growing conditions.

AZ Landscape Creations is a licensed landscape contractor that specializes in landscaping in Gilbert, landscaping in Chandler and landscaping in Mesa. We also serve the East Valley communities of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Phoenix, Tempe, Queen Creek, and Ahwatukee.
AZ Landscape Creations not only specializes in customized landscape design and installation, but Mesa excavation as well. Arizona is known for its hard, caliche-like dirt, making excavation and grading something best left to professional contractors with heavy equipment and the training, knowledge, and experience to get your project done quickly and safely. Proper dirt work (excavating, grading, trenching, etc.) plays a key role in most any successful landscaping project. Constructing the proper foundation for your landscape design can ensure the installation will last for years to come! Some of our services includes the following:
Mesa Excavation Services
The most common service we offer in landscape design is gravel spreading. Whether your property is simply a dirt lot in need of all new granite, or if you are looking to replace your outdated rock with a fresh-new look, our bobcat service will make the process quick and painless. In just a few hours, we can transform the most barren, eyesore of a yard into a welcoming and fresh space! If you have a dirt driveway or are in need of some additional parking on the side of your home, consider installing 1/4 minus or gravel for a durable foundation. These materials are not only more affordable than concrete or asphalt, but are also more beautiful. They will provide great curb appeal and help keep the dust down.AZ Landscape Creations also offers drainage and erosion control services. Ensuring your landscaping has the proper drainage is the most important element in any landscape design. There is nothing worse than helplessly watching rain water flood your existing landscape. Whether your landscaping needs some extra fill dirt to raise the elevation, a berm to keep water out or a culvert to allow water to pass through, our Mesa excavation service can help protect your property. We can also design and install a retaining wall. A retaining wall can not only help guard against erosion control, but can also add beauty and functionality to your outdoor living space.
Mesa Landscape Excavation
Many times our Mesa excavation services are part of an even larger project. The first step in installing paver patios and artificial turf is proper excavation. Ensuring a solid, stable base is the key to minimizing settlement issues and building a lasting investment.
Sometimes it is those “simple” landscaping additions that really make a landscaping project pop! Building mounds is a great way to reshape and enhance most any landscape design. Building mounds can help add height to a dull, flat area and also help block out unwanted views. They can be used to redirect foot traffic or drainage. Mounds can add beauty as well to your outdoor living space. They can act as a raised element to the garden, or simply emphasize a special focal point.
AZ Landscape Creations Mesa excavation services can also help plant large trees. Planting large trees is another great way to add value and interest to your landscape design. Large trees are a smart choice for our desert environment. The instant shade of large trees can offer refuge from the sun and also lower those electric bills. Large trees also bring tremendous beauty and enhance the maturity of your landscape. With large, mature trees, a fresh, new landscaping project can look as though it has been established and cultivated for years.

Looking to add some curbside appeal? Looking to add some color and pop to your backyard landscape? Consider a Mesa artificial grass installation project!
Artificial grass is the ultimate landscaping solution for many homeowners these days. If you are a desert dweller who loves the look of an immaculate, green, fresh-cut, lush lawn and wants a low-maintenance landscape design, then artificial grass is your answer!
Why Artificial Grass?
Artificial turf was primarily first utilized in athletic fields because of its great durability. These days, Mesa artificial grass installation projects have become very popular. Sales have escalated due to the dramatic improvement in the quality and variety of available artificial turf options. Homeowners are also choosing synthetic grass as it is virtually maintenance free. It also requires less time and money for upkeep, and is eco-friendly for our Valley’s harsh drought conditions.
Artificial grass is tuff and can withstand much more use, wear and tear than natural grass. It is perfect for households with pets and children. In fact, AZ Landscape Creations installs synthetic grass that comes with a 10 year warranty! The synthetic fibers are also soft, which makes it very enjoyable and perfect for use around swimming pools.
Artificial turf is ideal for busy homeowners who do not want to deal with the upkeep of a natural lawn. There is no need for mowing, edging, fertilizing, watering, etc. Elderly homeowners and homeowners with vacation properties also find synthetic grass to be very practical as it can simply be hosed off every once in a while. Quality artificial grass can add immediate curb appeal to any home!
Artificial Grass Putting Greens
With the popularity of golf in the Valley, many homeowners are adding putting greens to their Mesa artificial grass installation projects. Whether you want to create a whole new look or simply add on to your current backyard landscape design, a backyard putting green can turn your backyard into a resort-like retreat. Putting greens are great entertainment for all ages and skill levels alike! Consider adding some outdoor lighting to your space for nighttime fun!
We have all seen the artificial turf for sale at stores like Home Depot and Costco. While it may be tempting to try the install yourself, artificial turf installation is best left to professional landscapers. Proper installation requires that base materials be machine compacted with a plate compacter to create a solid, stable foundation. In addition, the foundation should be graded and prepped to ensure proper drainage. Finally, the installation should be finished by using a power broom to elevate the blades for a natural look. It is best to finish the installation with a concrete curbing or paver border. This will help protect the grass edge.

Check out this Mesa backyard landscape design and installation project that AZ Landscape Creations recently completed. The backyard started out as just dirt, a total blank canvas. The homeowners had lived in their house a few years and were tired of the eye sore out their back windows. They wanted to create a lush space with their backyard landscaping with lots of plants, trees and grass that would maximize their outdoor living space, be safe for their little ones as well as conducive to outdoor entertaining!
Mesa Backyard Landscape Design – It’s About the Details
We began the Mesa backyard landscape design project with the concrete paver patio installation. This is usually the most time and labor intensive part of most any install. First, we laid veneer concrete pavers over the existing concrete slab. Then, we excavated 7 inches below grade, installed and machine compacted 4 inches of aggregate base material and 1 inch of concrete sand in the remaining patio area. Finally, we laid the pavers in the backyard area, creating a large patio area and a walkway extending to the side and front of the home. We also used the pavers to create a border for the grass area.
The prep process is key to any successful and lasting paver installation. All too often I see other landscaping companies cut corners here to get the job done quickly and cheaply. Many companies simply sand set the pavers or only use ¼ minus for base. It is important that landscaping contractors follow the guidelines established by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) to ensure the highest quality and durability.
Once the pavers were completed, we built some mounds along the back wall and started trenching for and installing irrigation. We had to run drip irrigation throughout the backyard for various trees and plants and setup a sprinkler system for the grass area. Once we had the water flowing, we planted Arizona Ash Trees, Queen Palms, Pygmy Palms, a Naval Citrus Tree, Lantana, Trailing Rosemary, Little John’s and other various low maintenance desert plants.
Next, we filled in the remaining areas with granite and grass. We also placed some large boulders throughout the yard as accent pieces and created a trash can pad with ¼ minus.
As you can see, the Mesa backyard landscape design project came together beautifully! The concrete paver patio created a colorful and rich foundation for the outdoor living space. Now the homeowners have a space to dine, relax and entertain. The soft and lush grass area is perfect for the little ones to play and run through the sprinklers this summer. The mounds, boulders, trees and plants work together to add interest, depth, texture and color to the backyard retreat.
This backyard went from dusty and dull to lush and colorful- what a transformation!

Chandler paver installation is one of the most requested services I get as a licensed landscape contractor. Concrete pavers have taken the place of “old school” concrete and have become almost a staple product in landscape remodels and new construction.
A Chandler paver installation project can be the perfect addition to most any landscape design. They can be used to create patios, pool decks, walkways and driveways that are functional, high quality and beautiful. Pavers offer a unique sense of richness and warmth that traditional concrete lacks. With proper patio paver installation, concrete pavers are durable and virtually maintenance free. They have a flexible base, unlike traditional concrete, that allows for settling and the natural expansion and contraction that commonly occurs with weather and temperature changes.
Proper Chandler Paver Installation
As a Belgard authorized contractor and an interlocking concrete pavement institute certified installer, I adhere to very strict guidelines in all of my paver installs. Each Chandler paver installation project follows the interlocking concrete pavement institute’s installation process which is as follows:
- Excavate- 7 to 9 inches
- Compact- with a 3000lbs psi mechanical plate tamper
- ABC (aggregate base)- 2 inches
- Sand- 1 inch
- Lay Pavers- with a soldier edged border
- Edge Restraint- around the perimeter of the paver area, secured with steel spikes
- Joint Sand- swept in between the pavers
These guidelines insure that your pavers are laid on a solid, stable, and level base capable of withstanding natural settling. It is important to ensure that each project is installed to ensure appropriate drainage as well. Setting your project up for success from the beginning, can help guarantee a beautiful patio for many years to come!
Potential Paver Problems
All too often, I get calls to fix unlicensed contractors work. I have seen all sorts of Chandler paver installation problems–crooked installs, sinking installs, incomplete installs, etc. It seems that many landscapers compete on price alone, and often end up cutting corners on their paver installation jobs. Many do not compact the area completely, or may just compact it by hand, not with a machine. Others may not excavate the full amount (or even at all) or may not lay the base aggregate, only sand.
It is important to find out before you hire a landscape contractor for your concrete paver installation what process they follow before it is too late. Quality installation may seem expensive, but it will be worth it in the end.
When choosing a contractor for your Chandler paver installation project, do your research. Ask for references. Make sure your contractor is licensed, bonded and insured with the State. Make a smart investment in both your home and lifestyle with pavers for your outdoor oasis!

Gilbert backyard landscape design is about so much more than plants, rock, grass, concrete pavers, etc. It is about creating an environment for outdoor living. It is about creating an experience! Mother Nature has already given us quite a jump start in the Valley of the Sun for beautiful landscape design with our beautiful weather. If you are looking to enjoy all Mother Nature has to offer, consider a Gilbert backyard landscape design that can attract wildlife! Here are a few key elements for captivating birds, butterflies and hummingbirds into your outdoor living space:
Food. Wildlife need varying food sources including pollen, foliage and berries. It is important to choose plants with staggered blooming and fruiting throughout the year to ensure year-round sustenance.
Habitat. Ensure your Gilbert backyard landscape design provides space for wildlife to seek cover and protection from weather and predation. There should also be space for the wildlife to nest and birth.
Water. Add a water feature like a small pond or birdbath into your design to provide moisture over the summer months.
When it comes to choosing the right desert plants for your Gilbert backyard landscape design, remember to look for plants that either provide food or habitat for wildlife. Here are some great options to get started:
An ornamental grass. Very fine-textured, almost fernlike. Arches from branches, upright stems. Resembles a small, very finely textured bamboo. Slow growing. Reaches a height of 4 to 6 feet and a width of 6 to 8 feet. Takes on a pinkish cast when in bloom. Requires full sun to partial shade. Drought tolerant. Hardy to 10°F. Great as a screening plant or a background accent. Great around pools.
A groundcover with long blooming tiny white blooms (with purple centers) from April to November. Can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Reaches a height of 6 to 12 inches and a width of 10 feet. Average water needs.
A perennial wildflower. Produces pale pink flowers that resemble butterflies from late spring to early fall. Also referred to as “whirling butterflies”. Fast growing. Reaches a height of 1 to 2 feet and a width of 1 to 2 feet. Does best in sun with afternoon shade. Although it requires little water, it is best to water deeply and infrequently. Needs well drained soil. Produces little litter and does not have any thorns. Drought tolerant. Hardy to 10°F. Perfect poolside or in a wildflower garden.
Cherry Red Sage
Produces deep scarlet spikes throughout spring, summer and fall. Reaches a height of about 18 to 24 inches and a width of 1 1/2 feet. Requires full sun. Average water needs. Drought resistant.
